How to Make a Drum Set

Drum sets consist of a number of different types of drums. Assembling a complete drum kit requires placing all the drums within easy access of the drummer's hands and feet. The principles to make a drum set are the same from the most basic to the elaborate, Neil Peart style drum sets. Larger drum sets tend to require turning to access some drums. Each individual drummer will have to make tiny adjustments to make their drum kit more comfortable to play.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the bass drum up on the floor. Make sure the legs are securely holding it in place. If the drum rocks back and forth, the legs need to be adjusted.

    • 2

Place the bass drum pedal behind the bass drum. It should be able to strike the bass drum solidly from this position.

    • 3

Place the drum stool behind the bass drum. Position the stool so the foot that will use the bass pedal can comfortably rest on it. Your leg should be relaxed when placed on the pedal.

    • 4

Place the hi-hat so that your other foot can comfortably rest on the hi-hat pedal when seated on the drum stool. Ad just the hi-hat height so that you are able to comfortably hit it with a drum stick.

    • 5

Set up the snare drum in a position that it is easily reached by the drum sticks when playing. The position to the left or right is a matter of preference. Be sure it is easily accessible when both feet are on the drum pedals.

    • 6

Set up the tom-tom drums in a position that allows them to be easily accessible. Keep in mind that some drum fills require moving rapidly across the different tom-toms. Make sure the location is one that allows you to move that way.

    • 7

Place the cymbal in a location you can strike easily. It is common to place it at the end of the tom-toms. Many drum fills end on the cymbal. This makes that location a logical spot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Drum sets with two bass drums require adjusting the angle of the drums so both pedals can comfortably be used. In that case, it is easier to sit on the stool and find the right position for both pedals before placing the bass drums. There is no one best setup for a drum kit. Each drummer will find some positioning more comfortable than others. Adjust drums that you are having trouble hitting. It takes some experimentation to get the exact positions correct.
