Direct3D is a major component of Microsoft's DirectX graphics programming language. Direct3D is only available for use on computers that use the Windows Operating System. It is also used as the graphics language on the gaming consoles XBox and XBox 360. The language and support structure is used to display three-dimensional graphics in games where high-end performance is required of the graphics card. Direct3D will use hardware acceleration if it is available in order to give a more realistic view of the game and game graphics. The main competitor to DirectX is Open GL; however, Direct3D can be used on computers that support both graphics support infrastructures.
