Things You'll Need:
- Quilt or sewing project with batting and backing
- Safety pins
- Thread for machine in colors needed
- Needles for machine
- Machine quilting frame
- Quilting machine or sewing machine
-
Step 1
Lay out and line up the quilt top, quilt backing and batting so they are even and placed together in the manner you wish them to be in when you finish the quilt. The seamed side of the quilt top should be placed against the quilt batting and the quilt backing on the other side of the batting.
-
Step 2
Pin the layers together with safety pins. Place safety pins all over the surface of the quilt, to hold the layers together. Place the pins approximately 6 inches from each other to ensure the layers do not shift out of place. This step may consume more time than any other step.
-
Step 3
Load the quilt onto the machine-quilting frame. To ensure that you place the quilt tautly onto the frame, ask for assistance from friend who can help you to stretch out the sections of the quilt as you quilt them with the machine. The top section of the frame will then slide over the quilt and bottom section of the frame once the quilt has been stretched into place.
-
Step 4
Tighten the top section of the frame so the quilt cannot slide back and forth between the two pieces of the frame. You will need to test this out after tightening, if you create a ripple in the section of quilt stretched in the frame then you will need to re-stretch and re-frame that section of the quilt.
-
Step 5
Place the framed section on the machine, making sure the frame slots line up with the machine so the frame may be moved around on the track while the machine is quilting the quilt. Allow the machine to quilt or quilt on your own, depending on the features of your machine.
-
Step 6
Mount a new section of the quilt as you complete each section of the quilt. Continue to remount and quilt until the entire surface of the quilt has been machine quilted.
