How to Increase the Backup Log File in the Microsoft Backup Tool for Windows XP

Microsoft's official Backup tool is a solid program for archiving your data, but it does have one drawback: it only stores the 10 most recent log files and discards the older ones. You can, however, increase that number.

On XP Professional, this tool is installed by default. XP Home users must install it from their Windows CD. To do that, open the CD in "My Computer." Then open the "ValueAdd" folder, the "MSFT" folder and then the "NTBACKUP" folder. Double-click on "Ntbackup.msi" to install the tool.

The Backup log is stored deep within a nest of folders.

Open the "Documents and Settings" folder. Next, open the folder that is labeled with your user name and then the following folders: the "Local Settings" folder, the "Application Data" folder, the "Microsoft" folder, the "Windows NT" folder, the "NTBackup" folder and the "Data" folder. This folder contains all your log files, which are identified by the ".log" file extension.

Hold down the "Ctrl" key and click on every file that has the ".log" file extension. When you have clicked on them all, press "Ctrl+C" to copy them. You can also click on the "Type" column to sort files by their extension.

Right-click on an empty space on your desktop. Select "New" and then "Folder." Label this folder, press "Enter" and double-click to open it. Press "Ctrl+V" to paste the log files that you copied in Step 4.

Move this new folder to a long-term location, such as an external drive or a USB flash drive. Make a note of where it is stored and periodically transfer new log files to it as needed.
