Internet Explorer is the most used web browser with millions of users, and while it is the most popular, the browser is not without its problems. Most users encounter the occasional "Internet Explorer has stopped working" message, but when the message occurs all the time, it is cause for concern. Luckily, nearly all Internet Explorer errors can be repaired with the simple use of an option within Internet Explorer, as is explored here.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Reboot your PC by going to "Start > Shutdown > Restart".

  2. Step 2

Boot your computer into "Safe Mode" by pressing the "F8" key a few times after the computer has rebooted. Then select "Safe Mode" from the "Boot Options" menu that appears.

  3. Step 3

Log on as yourself in "Safe Mode."

  4. Step 4

Double-click the "Internet Explorer" icon on your Desktop while in "Safe Mode".

  5. Step 5

Click the "Tools" icon and then click "Internet Options".

  6. Step 6

Click the "Advanced" tab located within the "Internet Options" box.

  7. Step 7

Click the "Reset" button to reset all Internet Explorer options. All toolbars, cookies and temporary files will be deleted, so back up anything you still need.

  8. Step 8

Reboot your computer into normal Windows mode by going to "Start > Shutdown > Restart".

  9. Step 9

Open "Internet Explorer" by double-clicking the icon and the browser will now function properly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't do the reset in normal Windows mode. While this occasionally will work fine, it's always safest and most thorough to do resets in "Safe Mode", as there is nothing to interfere with the reset.
