Priming is the term used to describe when air is purged from a pump, allowing water to move freely through it. Priming is essential to pool and spa pumps. A pump may need to be primed for several reasons, including air in the pump, obstacles and power outages. Whenever priming is lost, it is necessary to prime the pump immediately to avoid damage to the system.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Petroleum jelly
  1. Step 1

Turn off the spa pump, spa heater and spa cleaner (if equipped).

  2. Step 2

Open the air relief valve on top of the spa pump.

  3. Step 3

Close all skimmer valves, but leave the main valve fully open.

  4. Step 4

Ensure there is some water in the pump basket area. Add a few gallons of water to this area of the pump if you are unsure.

  5. Step 5

Inspect the pump lid and O-rings for signs of deterioration, such as cracks.

  6. Step 6

Lubricate the pump lid O-ring with petroleum jelly and install it by hand tightening.

  7. Step 7

Set the filter valve to the "Filter" setting.

  8. Step 8

Turn on the spa pump. Note that it may take the pump a few minutes to be primed. However, do not allow the pump to run for more than 20 minutes without water circulation. Otherwise, overheating might occur.

  9. Step 9

Open the skimmer valves slowly, one at a time, once the pump has achieved circulation.

  10. Step 10

Close the valve if it appears the pump will lose priming. This allows the pump to adjust to the induction of air. Slowly open the valve again; repeat this process until no more air enters the pump with the valves opened.

  11. Step 11

Close the air relief valve on top of the lid when all valves are opened and all air has escaped, leaving a steady stream of water.

  12. Step 12

Turn the heater and spa pool cleaner on if desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remove any debris from the pump basket. Debris can hinder priming.
  • Several attempts may be necessary before the spa pump is successfully primed.
