Garage door openers make opening and closing a garage door easy. To keep your garage door opener running as it should, periodic adjustment should be made. By making sure the door opens and closes as it should, the safety of the door is kept intact. The average do it yourself homeowner can make these adjustments with only a couple of tools and an hour of time.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Open the garage door by using the push button wall station for the opener. Check to make sure that the bottom of the door is open fully. Push the wall button again to close the door and make sure it seals tight to the floor without setting off the auto reverse sensor.

  2. Step 2

Adjust the limits by turning the limit switch on the back of the garage door opener. Using a step ladder to reach it, locate the limit switch for either up or down. These are plastic white screws and they are usually marked. Using a screwdriver turn it to adjust the up or down limit as necessary.

  3. Step 3

Test the automatic reverse feature of the garage door. Place a piece of wood under the path of the garage door. Use the push button to operate the door to close. When it comes in contact with the wood, it should stop and then reverse.

  4. Step 4

Locate the down force adjustment knob on the back of the garage door opener. Adjust it by turning it clockwise with your fingers just a few increments. Retest the door.

  5. Step 5

Test the up force adjustment by operating the door with the push button and then have a friend gently apply force to prevent the door from opening. If it stops the adjustment is good. If it does not stop or extra force is needed, the up force needs to be adjusted.

  6. Step 6

Locate the up force adjustment and adjust it the same way the down force is adjusted. Retest the door.
