Things You'll Need:
- Knife (fixed or folding)
- Object such as wood for the purpose of demonstration and practice
- Cleaning cloth
- Multi-purpose oil or lubricant
-
Step 1
Hold the knife with a firm but comfortable grip for demonstration. It is important to firmly hold the knife so that the handle does not slip from the hand. The grip should be firm but not uncomfortable.
-
Step 2
Instruct the individual to always carry the knife with the blade pointing down. This is an important safety tip. If the person carrying the knife should slip, trip or fall, the blade will be pointed down and away from the body, minimizing the risk of injury.
-
Step 3
Show the proper manner for cutting while holding an object. Always push the sharp edge of the blade away from the body and never pull the blade toward yourself.
-
Step 4
Operate folding knives carefully both when opening and closing. Unlike fixed-blade knives, folding knives feature a blade which pivots to close into the handle of the knife. It is important to keep fingers away from the blade during the opening and closing process.
-
Step 5
Clean the knife after use. As with any tool it is important to properly maintain the tool so that it will perform as intended and last for many years. Apply a small amount of oil or lubricant to the surface of the knife and wipe the knife thoroughly with a cloth.
