How to Insulate a Beer Keg

Keep your beer keg insulated and chilled by using just a few items that you can pick up at about any convenience store. With a trash can, ice and a towel, you can keep your keg chilled for hours and keep the cold beer flowing--or use a keg cover for an all-in-one solution. The ice creates a barrier between the keg and the room's temperature, slowing the transfer of heat to the keg and allowing it to stay cool longer. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 32-gallon trash can
  • 10 lbs. bag of ice (four or five)
  • Towel
  • Keg cover

Instructions

  1. Icing

    • 1

Set up your keg serving area. Fold a towel in half--folding horizontally--and place it on the floor. Set your 32-gallon trash can on top of the towel.

    • 2

Dump a bag of ice into the trash can, and then lift the keg up and into the trash can. Pack another bag or two around the sides of the keg, keeping the keg centered in the trash can.

    • 3

Dump another bag of ice on top of the keg. Pour water into the trash can until the water level rises to about 1/2 to 1/3 the height of the keg.

    • 4

Use additional ice to keep the keg down when it starts to float.

Tips & Warnings

  • For keg covers, simply lift the cover over the keg, threading the keg's tap through the top of the cover.
