How to Set Up Reverse DNS

A reverse DNS, commonly known as a reverse DNS lookup (rDNS) is a process that determines the domain name associated with a specific Internet Protocol (IP) address. You can set up reverse DNS lookup from the DNS console in your Windows operating system. You will need administrative rights and privileges to perform this task.

      Click the "Start" menu and select "All Programs." Click "Administrative Tools." Click to launch "DNS."

      Expand the contents on the left pane. Single-click to select the DNS server that you want to configure and set up. Double-click to expand and display all of its contents.

      Locate the entry for "Reverse Lookup Zones." Right-click it and select "New Zone." Click "Next" when the wizard starts.

      Choose the option "Primary Zone." Click "Next."

      Type the network ID in the box labeled as such. If you do not know your network ID, contact your IT department or your Internet service provider. Click "Next."

      Review the configuration summary. Select "Finish" to end the task.
