If a truck has power door locks, it may have a keyless entry system. But having power door locks is not absolute proof. If a truck comes with a keyless entry key fob, that's proof positive it has keyless entry. If you have a truck but no key fob, it could still have either a factory-installed or an aftermarket keyless entry system. There's a simple test you can run to find out. Actually, this "test" is a standard method of programming the key fob.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ignition key
  • Remote transmitter
  1. Step 1

Grab the ignition key and climb into the driver's seat of the truck. Make sure all the doors and windows are closed. Push the power lock button to lock the doors to find out if the truck has keyless entry.

  2. Step 2

Insert the truck key into the ignition all the way, then pull it completely back out. Repeat this action five more times. You must insert/pull out the key at least six times within 10 seconds for this test to work. The hazard lights should flash if there's a keyless entry, and, if you did this step properly.

  3. Step 3

Insert the truck key into the ignition again. Turn the key to the "Accessory" position. Push any button on the remote transmitter. The hazard lights on the truck should flash in response if it has a keyless entry system.

Tips & Warnings
  • To find out if a truck has a factory-installed keyless entry, you can also call your dealer. Ask them to run a check based on the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) of the truck.
  • If you insert the truck key into the ignition too fast during Step #2, the test won't work.
