Things You'll Need:
- Tape recorder
- Notebook or note cards
- Video camera
- Markers
- Poster board
-
Step 1
Gather information from relatives about their ancestors. Keep all information in a notebook or a binder of note cards; this ensures the information is all in one place and will not be lost. Ask relatives for information about any ancestors they are aware of.
-
Step 2
Ask for specific information for each ancestor such as date of birth, location of birth, names of parents and siblings, career information, and the name of their spouse and children, if any. Also ask for copies of available photographs of ancestors.
-
Step 3
Make videotapes and audio recordings of family elders talking about significant events in their lives. These items can be links in an online family tree or may be included in a pocket to hold a DVD disc at the front or back of a family tree book.
-
Step 4
Ask family elders to write descriptions of any ancestors they remember. Have them include as many details about the ancestor as possible. Take about six months to speak with family elders and give them time to write down their recollections.
-
Step 5
Pick the format for the family tree. Options include creating a family tree with a template online, using poster board to create a drawing of a tree and adding family information to each branch, or writing in a journal to create a book of family history. Gradually compile the information needed and neatly make it into a family tree in a format of your choice.
