How to Design an Office Plantscape

How to Design an Office Plantscape thumbnail
Miniature cactus are great office plants for plantscape designs.

Having a plantscape in the office can add a level of warmth and comfort to an otherwise traditional workspace. They are easier to maintain than large plants and demand little attention for pruning and repotting. Learn how to design an office plantscape for your traditional office or cubicle by following the article below.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of the area where you want to place your plants. This will help you choose the proper plant type and container size for your desk or work area. Select areas where the plants are not in danger of falling, being knocked over or being tripped over.

    • 2

Choose several small plants such as miniature cacti and tropical plants. Lucky bamboo can also be used to create an office plantscape but should be kept separate from the cacti and other plants because of the different needs in care.

    • 3

Select a glass container larger than needed to accommodate the current needs of your plants and their growth. Also make sure the mouth is wide enough to place the plant in the container. Otherwise, the size is completely your decision; plantscapes can be created in small jars or aquariums.

    • 4

Locate sand and pebbles at home or at the store. Mix enough sand and pebbles to create a 1-inch layer on the bottom. This is to create a source of drainage for excess water because there are no holes in the bottom of the container like in traditional pots.

    • 5

Place a layer of soil 1/4 of an inch to 1/2 inch deep over the pebble and sand mix. Dig a hole with your fingers large enough for the plants to be placed in.

    • 6

Remove the purchased plants for the plantscape from their current containers. Gently place them in the holes that were dug for them.

    • 7

Add another 1/4 inch to 1 inch of soil loosely around the base of the plant. Make sure the plant is securely in place and will not fall over.

    • 8

Add a small amount of water too the container and put your plantscape in the desired location. Add additional water only when the soil is dry and no condensation is apparent on the glass. Too much water can result in the plant drowning or the growth of mold or fungus.

Tips & Warnings

  • Lucky bamboo can be an excellent addition to an office with limited space because they stay small, need smaller than average containers, and can thrive in almost any conditions.
