How to Make Porta Crib Sheets
Portable cribs are a convenient way to travel with an infant and can be used in hotels, at picnics or anywhere you need a place for your infant to sleep. With the convenience come expensive accessories like sheets and blankets. Standard-size crib sheets are larger and do not fit portable cribs, so you have to buy sheets specifically made for use in portable cribs. For a more economical option, try sewing your own custom sheets. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the mattress on your portable crib. You will need to measure the length, width and depth to ensure the fitted sheet will fit snugly and not pose a suffocation hazard. For flat sheets, add 6 inches to your measurements so the infant will stay covered while sleeping.
-
2
Cut your fabric to the measurements for your fitted sheet, adding 1 inch to the length and width so you can hem the edge. Cut a diagonal line on the corner of the fitted sheet that is as long as the measurement you recorded for the depth. Repeat for all four corners. Next, cut your flat sheet using those same measurements plus the additional 6 inches. You should buy either cotton or jersey fabric, because those are the softest to your infant's tender skin and also easy to wash.

3
Pin the cut corners of the fitted sheet using straight pins, and then sew to make a fitted corner. Repeat for all four corners. Pin the sides every 4 to 6 inches to create a hem. Sew a hem along all four sides using a sewing machine loaded with heavy-duty cotton thread. Repeat for flat sheet. Remove pins and set aside.

4
Cut the elastic into four equal strips and pin to the corners of the fitted sheet along the hem. You will want to gather slightly as you pin, so the sheet will have a tight fit on the mattress. Sew the elastic securely to the fitted sheet and remove the pins.

5
Put the fitted sheet on the portable crib mattress to be sure it fits securely. The sheet should lay taut and flat against the mattress with no gaps or extra material gathering in the middle. Add the flat sheet, tucking into the sides just like you would on a standard-size crib.
