If you have a car you want to transport from the United States to Colombia, you will need to use an international car shipping company. To ship a car to Colombia, the car must be new. This means it needs to be the current or most-recent model year because Colombia does not allow older, used cars to be imported. If your car in new, you can have it shipped from one of the southeastern U.S. ports, like Miami or Galveston to a port in Colombia.
Things You'll Need
- Proof of ownership
- Copies of driver's license and passport
Visit the Hauling Depot website to find a car shipping company (see link in Resources). When you fill out its online form for a shipping quote, you will get quotes from five international car shipping companies. If you are using an international mover, you could ask them for the name of a car shipping company as well.
Determine which method of shipping you want to use. Choose from container shipping or roll-on-roll-off (RORO) shipping. Container shipping is the more expensive option where the car is put into a sealed container for shipping. Since the container is locked, you are allowed to put personal items in the car. With RORO shipping, the car is driven on and off the ship, which means you cannot leave any personal items in it.
Request references from the shipping companies you are interested in using. Most shipping companies have a list of references for potential customers. Call a few of the references to see how they would rate the shipping company.
Book your shipping and put down your deposit. To hold a booking, most shipping companies require a deposit. Some companies require full payment up front but the standard is that the balance is due when the car reaches its destination. Keep in mind that when the car reaches its destination port you will also have to pay duties in Colombia. When you book your shipping, you are usually given a 3-to-5 day window for pickup. Only when the car has been picked up can you get a delivery date for the car to reach its destination.
Give the shipping companies two copies of your passport, driver's license and proof of ownership. For proof of ownership, you can use the title of the car or a bill of sale. These things are needed for customs paperwork.
