How to Make a Spoon Rest
Spoon rests make innovative gifts that recipients can actually use in their kitchens. Not only are spoon rests decorative additions to any kitchen, they serve a practical purpose as well by keeping spoons from dirtying clean countertops. Make your own spoon rest out of clay and decorate it in the style you wish.
Instructions

1
Roll the clay on a dry, flat surface until it is ¼-inch thick.
-
2
Draw a spoon shape on the clay. Make the head of the spoon between 6 and 7 inches long and between 4 and 5 inches wide, and make the handle of the spoon between 3 and 4 inches long and between 2 and 3 inches wide.
-
-
3
Use a paring knife to cut the form from the clay.
-
4
Mold a smooth dip into the clay to hold a spoon by pushing down and outward from the center of the clay. Gently smooth the clay upwards toward the edges to give the spoon rest rounded, even edges.
-
5
Continue shaping the spoon rest to the desired shape by smoothing it gently with your fingers and palms. Allow the clay to air dry completely for 24 hours.
-
6
Paint the spoon rest with acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry completely, then spray it with clear acrylic spray coating to give it a glossy shine.

Tips & Warnings
Carve decorations into the clay to customize your spoon rest. Mist the clay occasionally to keep it smooth and malleable if necessary.
Beware of crushing or distorting your spoon rest when smoothing and shaping it; otherwise, you will have to start again from scratch.
