How to Install a Bluetooth Module

The Bluetooth module is the hardware component that is installed in a laptop for the purpose of wireless communication. This small component makes your electronic device discoverable by other Bluetooth-compatible devices. Installing this component can be a rather different procedure from the software installation, because it requires manual labor. Yet it can be done with just a few minor tools and a detailed instruction guide.

Things You'll Need

  • Laptop
  • Screwdriver
  • Bluetooth module installation disc

Bluetooth Module Hardware Installation

  • Turn the laptop face down, with its back label facing you. Remove the laptop's full battery and A/C adapter plug.

  • Disassemble the laptop. Unscrew its hard disk cover, which is located in the lower right corner of the unit's back panel. Once the screws are removed, simply lift the hard disc cover from the laptop.

  • Remove the hard disk drive and base cover. Behind the hard disk cover, you will see a rectangular disk plate. Lift it and move it away from the laptop. The base cover on most laptops is the black hard plastic casing over the back of the entire laptop. It consists of approximately 22 to 25 screws that are positioned around the outer region of the laptop's base cover. Unscrew and remove all of the screws. Lift and remove the base cover from the laptop.

  • Configure and install the Bluetooth module. The antenna cable should be connected to the Bluetooth module itself. There will be a silver prong along the inner area where the Bluetooth module will sit inside of the laptop. (This will look exactly like a battery being inserted into a television remote.) Once the antenna is successfully configured, the connect the other end of the antenna to the Bluetooth module. Connect the Bluetooth module to the computer's connector.

  • Reassemble the laptop. Start with the base cover, placing it back on the top of the laptop, and screw all of the components back in. Insert the hard disk drive and place the hard disk cover back over the drive. Screw the hard disk cover back down to secure the hard disk drive. Power the laptop back on. (This process may take a little longer than usual due to the recent installation. Allow several minutes for the laptop to power back onto your desktop screen.)

  • When the laptop has powered on successfully, insert the Bluetooth module installation disc into your computer's CD-ROM door. Once your computer has detected the disc, the Installation Wizard will open automatically. Follow the Bluetooth software prompts to complete the installation process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although the Bluetooth module can be installed manually, it would be best to hire a computer technician if you do not possess any technical computer skills. Organize your workspace before beginning the installation process. This ensures that you do not misplace any of the laptop's components such as its screws or covers. It is highly recommended that you restart your computer, again, once the software installation is complete to ensure your computer receives all of the proper updates needed.
  • Make sure the laptop is powered off before you begin the module installation process. It can cause serious damage to your laptop if you disassemble it while it is running. The completion of the Bluetooth module hardware installation does not mean that the full installation process is complete. You must install and configure the Bluetooth module's software for full functionality. Avoid static electricity. It is always wise to touch a metal object before conducting the installation process, to eliminate any type of static electricity. Do not leave your hard disk drive anywhere where it can be damaged. If this happens, the files and programs that are saved to the hard drive may not work properly. As a result, you may not be able to recover anything from your computer. The Bluetooth module is very sensitive component. Never touch the center of the Bluetooth module. Only touch the sides of the module, to avoid tampering with the device and damaging it.
