Bulimia is a destructive eating disorder that causes physical and emotional damage. The condition can take its toll on relationships, as tensions develop concerning health concerns and privacy issues. It can be difficult to watch as your boyfriend succumbs to urges to binge eat and later purges his ingested food. Although helping your boyfriend stop being bulimic can be challenging, doing so can have a positive impact on your relationship and his well-being.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Assess your own dietary and exercise habits. Avoid seeming insensitive or hypocritical about your boyfriend's negative behaviors. It's much easier to address harmful behaviors if you're not guilty of the same offenses. Ensure that you eat a well-balanced diet, consisting of the appropriate amount of foods from each group. Maintain a healthy exercise regimen that doesn't overwork your body.

  2. Step 2

Prepare a compelling argument. Factor your boyfriend's personality when determining a suitable approach. While some boyfriends might respond well to outspoken criticism, others might require more subtle presentation techniques. Let your boyfriend know that you care about his physical health and his emotional well-being. Explain that you've noticed specific dietary and exercise behaviors that are causing you concern.

  3. Step 3

Respond to appeals for help with compassionate firmness. Although your boyfriend might require a shoulder to cry on, he doesn't need a doormat. Refrain from being an enabler, as this eventually causes more damage. For example, while supplying your boyfriend with binge snacks might prevent an immediate argument, it serves to reinforce his adverse behavior. It also makes him more likely to blame you for allowing him to engage in destructive behavior.

  4. Step 4

Uncover attempts to hide his bulimia. Notice signs of binging, which include rapidly depleted food levels and unusually large amounts of discarded food wrappers. Observe signs of purging, which include accumulation of laxatives and excessive aerobic exercising. Physical signs and symptoms of bulimia include rapid weight gain and loss, discolored teeth and the unmistakable smell of vomit. Understand that some bulimics try to mask the smell of vomit with chewing gum and cologne.

  5. Step 5

Refrain from feeding into his negative body image. Use your status as his girlfriend to your advantage by explaining that his weight is fine to you. Avoid complementing his excessive workout regimen if the results are achieved by unhealthy behavior.

Tips & Warnings
  • Getting other friends involved in your efforts can prove beneficial to your cause. Monitoring his eating activities when he's away from you can help you uncover negative behaviors. Simple steps such as checking meal receipts can aid in the fight against bulimia.
  • Engage in open dialogue about his bulimia without chastising him. Understand that stressful situations can lead to binging and purging episodes.
