How to Make a Music Video in iMovie

Music videos are great projects for kids to do; they absolutely love making the videos and you will see some amazing work. iMovie has a feature under the advanced pull-down menu entitled, "Paste over at playhead," which makes making music videos very easy. One great thing about music videos is that they are supposed to be cheesy and sappy, so taking some scenes over the top is just fine. Follow these steps to creating some amazing music videos with your kids.

Instructions

    • 1

Listen to the songs that the kids choose first, and have them print the lyrics out for you as well.

    • 2

Film one long take of the singer lip-synching the entire song. Remember that you are going to be dropping other scenes into this, so if you forget lyrics or want to change locations (by running across a room or outside), keep the camera rolling and make sure you do this in one take. You should have the song blasting from some speakers because you are not going to be using the audio from this take; you are going to lay the original song over the video.

    • 3

Film the scenes that you are going to drop in the video. For example, if you are filming a love song video you might want shots of someone looking at a picture or out of a window. Again, you are not going to use the audio from these scenes, so you can be talking during the filming.

    • 4

Import all of the video footage and lay the audio track down.

    • 5

Cut the insert shots so that they are perfect. Select them and then hit "copy."

    • 6

Put the timeline exactly where you want to insert the shots and pull down "Paste at Playhead." This will insert those scenes and keep the lip-synching perfectly in place.
