Things You'll Need:
- Crochet cotton or yarn
- Crochet hook
- Fabric stiffener
- Plastic gloves
- Large plastic bowl or storage bag
- Wax paper
- Glass jar or vase
-
Step 1
Select a crocheted basket pattern, which you can find in a book, magazine or at a free pattern site. The pattern will have directions for the size crochet hook and fiber you will need. The hook will be no larger than a size E for the more delicate crochet work.
-
Step 2
Begin crocheting the bottom of the basket according to directions. This will be a round or small shape according to the directions. It is important to pay attention to your stitch count to keep the bottom flat and even.
-
Step 3
Complete the basket bottom and cut the crochet fiber. Attach the crochet fiber to the interior of the bottom. Begin to crochet into the bottom piece to form the foundation of the basket interior shape.
-
Step 4
Crochet the basket interior according to the pattern directions. Keep a close count of your stitches. You will be increasing stitches on the first rows to increase the size or to shape the basket.
-
Step 5
Continue crocheting the basket interior until you are at the top. Cut the fiber at the last row and weave it into the rim of the basket. Set the basket aside.
-
Step 6
Crochet the handle according to the pattern directions. If this is a separate piece you will sew the handle to the sides of the basket when it is complete.
-
Step 7
Pour the fabric stiffener into a bowl, according to the directions. You should be using a stiffener that is specifically made for doilies and cotton fabrics. Put a pair of plastic gloves. Immerse the crocheted basket in the liquid fabric stiffener and make sure it is saturated.
-
Step 8
Cover a small bowl or vase with wax paper. Place the wet basket, top-side down, onto the form, and shape it for drying. Place wadded up pieces of wax paper under the drying basket to help shape it.
Let the basket dry for at least 48 hours before use.
