Instructions

    • 1

Using your seam ripper, undo the vertical seams on the outside of the legs of your jeans, starting at about the knee and moving downward.

    • 2

Cut your jean or other heavy fabric into a rectangle that is about 2 inches longer than the height of your ripped seam, and about 1 inch wider than your desired width (how much fabric you will be adding to the bottom of the jean leg).

    • 3

Turn the jeans inside out and pin your heavy fabric to the inside of the ripped seam, creating an upside-down V with the pant leg and leaving excess on all sides. Make sure that you measure each side to keep them even, and fold the bottom of the fabric under to create a nice hem.

    • 4

Stitch the heavy fabric to the seams, about 3/5 of an inch from the ripped edge. Then stitch the hem.

    • 5

Cut away the excess fabric and turn the jeans right side out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure your seams look neat from the outside before stitching the new fabric to the jeans. If you measure well, you can also hem the new fabric before you stitch it to the jeans for a cleaner look.

  • Be aware that in Step 3, a wider V would create bell-bottoms, so keep the width to about 2 inches wider at the bottom of the leg for a nice subtle boot cut.
