Comcast is a major provider of cable Internet services in the United States, and it offers a choice of several connection speeds. Comcast cable Internet isn't offered everywhere, but if you can get it in your area, you usually can schedule cable installation and activation within a few days of requesting service.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find out if Comcast cable Internet is offered in your area. You can enter your address at BuyComcast.com or call (866) 529-1422 from a touch-tone phone and use the automated menu to find out if Comcast serves your area.

  2. Step 2

Call the phone number in Step 1 or stay on the line if you learn that Comcast offers Internet service to your area. Use the automated menu to indicate that you are a non-customer who wants to sign up for services. You'll be put on hold for the next available service representative.

  3. Step 3

Tell the service representative what services you want. If you want Internet only, be prepared to be offered additional services or package deals that include cable TV and phone.

  4. Step 4

Discuss the various connection speeds and current prices with the service representative. You may want one of the higher speeds if you frequently use the Internet to play games online in real time or if you frequently send or receive large files via the Internet. If you use the Internet mostly for casual browsing and email, you may able to save by selecting a slower speed. After listening to all the options, make it clear to the representative which speed you want.

  5. Step 5

Work with the representative to schedule an appointment with a technician, who will come to your home to run cable lines if necessary and install a modem. The technician also will install required software on your computer. You will be given a time range of a few hours on the day you choose for your service appointment, and you must be home during that time.

  6. Step 6

Grant the technician access to the room where your computer is located. After the technician finishes installing your cable, you will be asked to sign an invoice and service agreement. You also will be given a chance to ask questions about your connection and service.

Tips & Warnings
  • Several installation costs likely will be associated with Comcast cable Internet. The representative you speak with on the phone should detail all charges for you when you set up your service appointment. The charges will appear on your first service bill.
