Things You'll Need:
- Your DirecTV contract
-
Step 1
Review your DirecTV contract and discover its expiration date. Compare this to the date you wish to terminate your service. If the contract's end is near, it may be better to wait for it to expire than to cancel, as you are often charged cancellation fees to break your contract.
-
Step 2
Contact a representative of the DirecTV customer service team via telephone. You can reach a DirecTV representative by calling 1-800-531-5000.
-
Step 3
Explain to the customer service representative that you wish to break your contract and cancel your service. Ask up-front about cancellation fees you'll be expected to pay. Often you will be required to pay a minimum of $15 to deactivate your service. You may also have to pay extra fees for early cancellation of your service package.
-
Step 4
Make arrangements to return the equipment you are renting from the company. Not returning rental equipment may result in lost equipment fees, which can be expensive.
-
Step 5
Set up payment arrangements to settle your financial obligation with DirecTV. Make sure you pay attention to your credit card or bank account, and check for any unauthorized transactions.

on 9/18/2009 Yes,and pay you will for a long time! Direct TV will put a huge charge on your bank account or credit card If you are not careful!
Do not believe a word Direct TV tells you! They will tell you one thing and do another. When I call customer service I never get a straight answer and never talk to the same person twice! I suggest you Email Direct TV to have a record of what was said and by whom and above all else as teachermrhuene says: Cancel that Credit Card or bank account FIRST THING!! whichever they have on file for you or have your bank or credit card co. put a block against any charges from Direct TV.I have had them for 5 months and they keep billing me for a month that I do not owe and I have proof and have sent them the proof they still say if I don't pay they will turn my service off.I refuse to pay something I do not owe!

on 8/18/2009 Yes, watch those fees as they can be around $400! However, if you want to cancel, it's probably because they did something wrong to break their end of the contract. I know, they tried to rip me off too. But, I got my money back! See how: http://www.ehow.com/how_5255105_cancel-reverse-early-cancellation-fee.html
PS. Make sure to cancel the credit card you gave them when you ordered service BEFORE you cancel. This will buy you time to fight. And you will fight.
