Step 1
Drain and replace the liquid fuel to correct some of the most common problems, such as difficulty with lighting, burning out during use and low-intensity flame. Be sure to flush out any old fuel completely to ensure removal of any residual contaminates. Use only Coleman-brand fuel to get the best results from your lantern, as other fuels can cause damage or result in poor performance.

Step 2
Replacing old batteries can resolve many issues with your Coleman lantern. Since this is a simple fix, always start troubleshooting with the batteries before looking for more complicated problems. Remember, even new batteries can be defective, installed incorrectly or out of date, resulting in performance issues that may give the appearance of more complicated problems.

Step 3
With prolonged usage, the cloth mantels on a gas lantern will eventually burn out and require replacement. To fix this issue, remove the ball nut on the top of the lantern, remove the ventilator and globe to expose the old mantels. Remove according to your owner's manual, or the instructions included with the new mantels and replace with new mantels. Replace the globe, ventilator and ball nut to complete the repair.

Step 4
Replace your lantern bulbs or LEDs if they seem to have lost efficiency or are providing less light than when new. Although every model is different, changing a bulb is usually a simple matter. Consult your owner's manual or instructions on the new bulb packaging for directions.

Step 5
Replacing the glass globe, due to breakage or cracking, is the most common issue you will encounter. These globes are made of durable, tempered glass, but they will break if dropped or struck by a hard object. Replacing a broken globe requires you to remove the ball nut and ventilator cover, and then carefully remove any broken glass. Install the new globe and replace the ventilator and ball nut to secure the globe.
