How to Downconvert HD

High Definition (HD) is the highest standard TV a home user can have (as of 2009). It provides higher quality resolution than a standard definition TV. However, for whatever reason, it is possible to downconvert the HD signal back to standard definition. In fact, there are many different ways to do such a task.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your cable or satellite provider and inform them that you wish to get rid of the HD package. They may or may not require you to bring in the equipment. This is a long-term fix and will downconvert the signal to standard definition even if you have an HDTV.

    • 2

Remove the HDMI cable that connects the HDTV with the other device, whether it be a BlueRay player or cable box. This is a short-term fix if you still want to keep the HD but just need to downconvert the signal for the time being.

    • 3

Connect the devices to the TV either with a coaxial cable or RCA cables (the red, yellow and white cables). Insert the cables into the "Out" ports of the device and plug the other end of the cables into the "In" port of the TV. This will send a standard definition signal from the device to the TV. Even if both are HD devices, the picture quality will only be as good as the lowest common denominator, which in this case are the standard definition cables.

I can't for the life of me understand WHY you would do this? If you have the time to explain your rationale for this "how to" I would appreciate it. ----------> If you have an HD compatible tv and video source, WHY would you NOT want to use it? That's basically what you paid for. It's common for cable service providers such as Time Warner to use non HD connections to an HD box because their DVR's are all HD capable. The non HD connections are only used if the TV is NOT HD compatible. (this makes sense)
