      Buy a piece of sugarcane that is at least partially green / golden brown about one foot in length. Make sure it is not already dark brown / ripe otherwise it will not root. This is the secret to get sugarcane to root.

      Place the soil in the container and thoroughly soak the soil. Place the sugarcane horizontally in the container and cover with more soil. Place container in a warm area (on tp of the fridge works great) until it is well rooted and starts sending up shoots. Make sure to check it regularly and keep it moist.

      When the cane is well rooted and has top growth, you can divide the cane into several pieces - cutting it between the roots (nodes) Another option is to cut the pieces between the nodes before planting and sealing the ends with a grafting wax to prevent disease and pest infestation.

Tips & Warnings

  • You have more success rooting the entire piece at once and not dividing it until the plants are well established since it keeps pests and disease out.
