How to Become a Court Reporter

A court reporter is generally responsible for recording the goings ons in court. There are a variety of types of court reporter, but the general career path that one would follow to become a court reporter is similar.

1. Realize that people are often confused between a court reporter in the sense of a reporter from a newspaper who covers court occurrences and a court reporter, traditionally known as a stenographer. The jobs are very different so it is important to be certain that you want to be a court reporter before you set out on a path to become a court reporter.

2. Look into the licensure requirements for court reporters in your state. Different states require people to undergo different amounts of training before they can become a court reporter. Depending on the type of court reporter you want to be, you will need to become licensed or trained in different ways. To become a full stenographer, it may take more than two years to become fully licensed.

3. Search for licensing programs in your area. Many technical schools and community colleges offer training to help people to become court reporters, and there is probably a program in your area.
