How to Plan a Camping Trip to Walt Disney World Florida

Camping at Walt Disney World offers a unique camping experience.

Since it opened more than 30 years ago, Walt Disney World has been popular vacation spot for young and old alike. With four distinct theme parks and two full water parks, Walt Disney World offers fun things to see, do and eat for everyone. In addition to the theme parks, Walt Disney World is the home of several world class resort hotels that offer a wonderful vacation experience in their own right. One of the most popular places to stay while at Walt Disney World is the Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground.

Instructions

Determine when to go. Fort Wilderness is a great place to camp, but remember that it's in Florida. Summertime can be very hot. Fall and winter, however, are often quite mild. If comfort is important to you, plan on camping at Disney in the fall or winter. If you are determined to sweat it out in the summer, however, Fort Wilderness Campground has a swimming pool and a beach for you to cool off and relax.

Chose your campsite. Fort Wilderness Resort offers four different types of campsites: tent or popup, full hook up, preferred and premium. If you are staying in a tent, the tent site will do just fine. However, if you are traveling in an R.V., you may want to consider a preferred or premium site, which offer preferred locations and larger campsites.

Book your trip early. All of the Walt Disney World resorts are popular, but camping at Fort Wilderness is one of the hardest trips to book because it offers a great family camping experience and there are limited camp sites available. Plan on booking your camping trip at least six months in advance to make sure you get the spot you want.

Plan to have fun. Fort Wilderness Campground offers great places to ride your bike, boat rentals, a swimming pool, gift shop and playgrounds.

Tips & Warnings

  • Campfires are not allowed at the individual sites, but there is a campfire gathering every night with s'mores and a Disney film under the stars.

  • Additionally, buses travel through the campground regularly to take you to the various theme parks, and a water ferry will take you to the Magic Kingdom.

  • Check the Walt Disney World website for ticket options to the various theme parks.
