Google has developed a tool to help writers focus their key words to the key words people are searching for. Using this tool can help you come up with title and key words for any article topic or idea you have. Using Google’s Keyword Search Tool will enable the right readers find your articles.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1
Go to Google Adsense Keyword Tool

Go to Google Adsense Keyword Tool

Direct your browser to the Google Adsense Keyword Tool, a link is provided in the resource section of this article. Leave the “Descriptive words or phrases” radio button selected.

  2. Step 2
Type in key word or phrase

Type in key word or phrase

Enter your topic idea, keyword, or phrase in the text box on the right. For this article we will use “Madden 2010 Football” as our key word search. Type the key word phrase into the text box and type in the “we want to make sure you are human” characters in the lower text box.

  3. Step 3
Evaluating the key word search data

Evaluating the key word search data

The keywords “running shoes” brought back a lot of data and the key words entered brought back more than 1.2 million searches. You can now focus your keywords to your article. For example, the key words “mens running shoes” had 135,000 domestic (U.S.) searches in July and more than 90,000 internationally.

  4. Step 4
Is more key word searches better?

Is more key word searches better?

This is where interpretation comes in. There are several theories on how to choose your keywords based on these search results.

Theory Two: Find key words that are “in the middle” of the search results.

Theory one is simple. More is better. Use the key words with the most searches. If 1.2 million people are searching for running shoes, their sure to find my article. The problem with this theory is the competition. There are thousands of websites competing for this vague key word combination.

The second theory is to avoid most of the competition by narrowing your key word search by selecting key words from the search results with words that are “in the middle” of the results. For example, if you scroll down you will find “best running shoe” with 22,200 and 14,800 searches. This is still pretty high, but is a lot better than 1.2 million. You could isolate your key words even more with “good running shoes” that has 9,900 and 6,600 searches. Using these “middle search results” will increase your Google ranking dramatically.

  5. Step 5

After you have chosen your key word(s), use them in the title of your article. For example, “Good running shoes for beginners”. Then use the key words once or twice in the first paragraph of the article and at least once in the last paragraph of the article. Use the words sporadically within the article as well to increase the odds of the Google spiders understanding what your article is about.

Tips & Warnings
  • Experiment with different words. The key word tool will produce synonyms to your searches as well.
