A grilled cheese sandwich can be as simple as placing a soft piece of cheese in between two slices of bread, or more complicated by adding olives, bacon or pickles to the cheese.

The cheese should be a softer variety to insure it melts quickly. Good choices are American, Velveeta, Cheddar, Swiss and grated Parmesan cheese.

Choose a soft white or wheat sandwich bread or specialty type breads like sourdough, Italian, French or potato bread.
