Things You'll Need:
- cooperative baby
- coat/jacket
- flashlight (optional)
- calm/no problem attitude
- deep breathing techniques to help with above
-
Step 1
Use a jacket or coat instead of a nursing blanket. This is the best tip I have discovered after nursing six kids. My babies have not liked blankets laying on their faces when they are trying to nurse. A lot of times it makes them hot and sweaty and uncomfortable. Try using a stiff coat to cover up yourself and baby. This will create a tent around baby so that baby can nurse comfortably underneath.
-
Step 2
Remain calm...even if baby is crying, a calm demeanor on your part will go a long way. Stress can hinder milk release and will cause your baby to be more upset.
-
Step 3
If baby is hysterical, try to calm them down before you latch on. Hold them tightly against you or hum to them to get them to stop crying, then "quickly" latch them on and have your jacket ready!
-
Step 4
This next tip is partially for laughs...but could be taken literally! Often times when I am nursing baby under my coat...it's dark in there! I have fumbled around and sometimes take too long latching and baby gets irritated. Invest in a small dollar store flashlight to see in there.
