Learn how to download and use the new Tom Tom iPhone app. While the built in iPhone map app does provide turn by turn directions, it is not the easiest to use while driving.

The new Tom Tom iPhone app brings all the great features you expect from stand alone GPS units to the iPhone.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • iPhone (3G or 3GS at first, later support for first Gen and iPod Touch coming)
  • Need for Tom Tom GPS abilities
  1. Step 1

Currently, in order to download the Tom Tom iPhone GPS navigation app, you need to have an iPhone 3G or 3GS to use it. These are the only iPhones currently with a true GPS built in.

  2. Step 2

Go the App Store as you normally would and search for "Tom Tom". Once you find it, it download it per usual. Note that unlike most iPhone apps, the Tom Tom app for iPhone costs $100 USD. If you are OK with this price (not bad relative to stand alone GPS systems), click install.

You will be prompted for your password. Enter it and proceed with the download.

  3. Step 3

Once the download is complete, you are ready to use the full featured Tom Tom iPhone app.

The app features landscape and portrait views, 2D and 3D viewing styles, and day/night modes as well.

There is also a car adapter kit featuring a holder, enhanced GPS hardware, and charger that will be sold seperately. This car adapter kit can also be used with iPod Touches and first generation iPhones to provide GPS navigation, thanks to its built in GPS device.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider all of your options before purchasing this App.
  • Since the iPhone can only run one app at a time (no multitasking), you will not be able to access other apps while running the Tom Tom app. You can take calls, which will temporarily close the Tom Tom app.
