How to Remove Red Wine From a Cotton Tablecloth in the Very Simplest Way

Many people think red wine is difficult to remove from a tablecloth. It isn't. This nineteenth century remedy from my family needs nothing but hot water and works like magic!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A stained 100% cotton tablecloth
  • A large teakettle
  • One or two relatives or friends
  1. Step 1

This old remedy will probably only work on 100% cotton fabric. Do this as soon as you can, after you find the stain--right after dinner, or as soon as the guests have left. It's OK if the stain has dried.

  2. Step 2

Boil a big kettle full of water--the larger the better, as long as you can lift it safely.

  3. Step 3

Have your two friends hold the stained area over the sink, one on each side, standing well back. (One person can be the holder in a pinch, but you and he/she must then be very careful.)

  4. Step 4

Pour the boiling water slowly through the stain.

  5. Step 5

If the stain isn't completely gone after one kettle full, boil another. The edges of the stain may take longer. When the stain is completely gone, hang the tablecloth to dry.

  6. Step 6

    Launder your tablecloth as usual.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep children out of the room while performing this procedure. They may do something sudden which results in someone getting scalded.
  • If the boiling water gets on anyone, apply cold water in liberal quantities IMMEDIATELY. Seconds count! Don't stop to get ice, use cold water right from the faucet.
