Replace a Broken Electrical Plug On a Power Tool

You have a great working tool, but the plug is shot. Maybe the ground is loose or the plug is fraying away from the power cord. It's an easy fix and should be done for safety issues if nothing else. Here are the few steps involved in replacing the plug on any power tool.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Screw driver, new plug, wire cutter/strippers and of course the power tool
  1. Step 1

If you have a two prong plug you will need to purchase a 2 prong replacement plug. This is a plug without a ground.

  2. Step 2

If you have a three prong plug you will need to purchase a 3 prong replacement plug. These plugs have a ground.

  3. Step 3

Cut off the old plug with a pair of wire cutters. Cut the plug off as close to the plug as possible so you will have a long cord when you are done.

  4. Step 4

Unscrew the new plug and slide it apart revealing the inside.

  5. Step 5

Thread the cut wire through the hole into the new plug.

  6. Step 6

Strip the wire insulation off the wire covering to expose the two or three wires.

  7. Step 7

There are different gages on your wire stripper, find the closest one and strip each individual wire.

  8. Step 8

Wire new plug according directions. There is usually a black, a white and green wire on a 3 prong plug and a (black, white) or (black, black) or even (white, white)on a two prong plug.

  9. Step 9

Slid wire under the screw in the appropriate place and screw clockwise to tighten.

  10. Step 10

Slip insulated cover over and tighten the screws on the end and the screws on the cord itself.
