The object of this lesson is to: not buy in hast and repent later.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Consumer Reports Annual edition (available at most public libraries)
  • Motor Trend Magazine
  • (issue specific)
  • Road & Track
  • Car & Driver
  • (like wise available at most public libraries)
  1. Step 1

1.) Determine the purpose: personal, commuting, car pooling, or work; etc.

  2. Step 2

2.) Once function has been determined the common mistake is singling out one make and model. category examples are: light pick-up truck (Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado, Toyota Tacoma) minivan (Toyota Sienna, Dodge Caravan, Volkswagen Rotan) personal sports (Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, Ford Mustang) etc.

  3. Step 3

3.) Read the magazine reviews (as many on your candidates as possible). It is important that you NOT be influenced by their best as it is not necessarily Your best. Try all before you decide.

Tips & Warnings
  • 4.) You should not be influenced by Consumer Reports NEW car reviews. However Consumer Reports Annual Report has important function: it has a report on prior years that might give an indication for how future models might perform. Check your group of candidates against their records.
  • Finally once the field has been narrowed to two makes and models, it is time to consult your insurance company on the cost of insuring your choices. A vehicle will be paid off at some time but insurance is an on going expense. (The Ford Mustang GT is considered a two door sedan while the Ford Cobra similarly equipped is considered a sport car.) (P.S.: You can purchase the Cobra decals later to change your Clark Kent GT into your Superman Cobra and your insurance premium won't suffer.) Good Luck and Good Hunting!
