This is the time of year when parents of college bound students begin to realize that their children are actually leaving the nest. How can the child who cannot even wash a dish possibly survive life on their own? And even more so, how can the parent of that child survive on their own? Having been in this situation I offer the following advise for parents of college students leaving home for the first time.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A STRONG constitution
  • A new Hobby
  • A cell phone that has a family plan or unlimited minutes
  1. Step 1

Do Not let your child see how anxious you are about them leaving home. They are nervous enough without you adding to their anxiety. Make the preparation for the departure as stress free as possible.

  2. Step 2

Think back to your own college days and the excitement you felt. This is a new chapter in your child's life, don't make them feel guilty about wanting to leave home. Make sure they know you will be there for support whenever they need it.

  3. Step 3

Don't call them 10 times a day! Remember, they will be missing you almost as much as you miss them. Calling constantly will only make things worse.

  4. Step 4

Find a new hobby or interest to occupy your time. Emerse yourself in a new project. Adopt a puppy from your local Humane Society or animal rescue. Go back to school. This is the natural order of things. Children leave and create their own lives. Don't be surprised though, in 4 years they may just be back!

Tips & Warnings
  • Join a club or organization
  • Get a part time job if you've been a stay at home mom
  • Do some volunteer or charity work
  • Find something to do that is rewarding to you
  • Make a list of all the things you put off doing because you didn't have the time and start doing them
