Be a thrifty fashionista by knowing when to shop.

A tough economy often means better business for thrift stores, as customers try to dress for success and stay within budget. Thrifty doesn't have to mean dowdy, however -- if you know how to shop, it can mean brand-new duds for a few dollars.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a store that has friendly workers, is organized and is clean. Visit the store several times and shop or donate. Make friends with the employees. They will show you the newest items.

    • 2

Look for clothes with the tags still on them. Department stores donate to Goodwill each week or so. You can find new garments and handbags regularly. Always check the handbags section.

    • 3

When you find a new jacket or top, ask a store employee what day the department stores or boutiques usually donate. When you find out what day the thrift store puts out new garments, be there early.

    • 4

Know when to shop. Spring cleaning means stores may be brimming with goods in April and May. Mondays might be good, too, because people will be cleaning over the weekend.

Tips & Warnings

  • Look over clothes for rips or stains.

  • Check under the arms and around the collars

  • If you like something that is too large, buy it and have it altered.

  • WARNING THIS SHOPPING CAN BE FUN AND ADDICTIVE.
