How to Make a Roller Skate Birthday Cake
Nothing could be better for a kid who loves to skate than a birthday cake shaped like a roller skate. Buy cake mixes and dig out your cake pans to put one together at home. Frost it to look like the real thing, book the skating rink for the party and prepare for a fun celebration. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 3 boxes cake mix, flavor of your choice
- Mixing bowls
- 2 9x13-inch baking pans
- 1 muffin tin
- Cupcake liners
- Frosting
- Spatula
- Food coloring
- Cake decorating bag and tips
- Base for the cake, such as a foil- covered piece of cardboard

Prepare two cake mixes according to package directions. Grease and flour two 9- by 13-inch pans. Pour the batter into the pans and bake. When the cakes are done, let them cool completely.

Prepare the third box of cake mix according to package directions. Pour the batter into 12 muffin tins lined with cupcake papers. Bake and cool completely. Four cupcakes will be used for the skate wheels; the remainder can be served separately.

Remove one cake from the pan and position it toward the bottom of the base with the long sides horizontal. Remove the second cake from the pan and place vertically against the first cake to form an "L" shape.

Cut about 3 inches off the bottom of the skate. Round the toe and use the cut-off pieces of cake to fill in the top curve of the "L" to resemble a skate.

Frost the entire cake and let it set, then decorate it as desired. Pipe the age of the child on the ankle and write your birthday greeting at the bottom. Make laces by putting stripes of chocolate frosting up the front of the skate. Surround the entire cake edge at the bottom where it meets the base with a row of piped icing.

Place four cupcakes at the bottom edge of the cake to look like the roller skate wheels. Frost them a contrasting color.
