Make an easy stew filled with vegetables and meat to keep you warm and cozy on a cold night. While many recipes call for red wine, this recipe is alcohol-free, making it a good choice if you prefer to avoid even the flavoring of wine. Things You'll Need

  • 1 pound chunked stew meat
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 bags frozen mixed vegetables
  • 5 large potatoes
  • 2 large carrots
  • 2 small cans tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 Tablespoons cooking oil
  • Pepper
  • Salt
  • Garlic powder
  • Large pot
  • Water

Instructions

      Cover the bottom of the pot with cooking oil. Set the pan over medium heat.

      Put the flour, pepper and salt into a medium mixing bow. Add the stew meat and toss to coat the meat with the seasonings and flour.

      Place your coated meat inside the pot when the cooking oil is hot and shimmering in the pan, but not smoking. Cook the meat until it is browned well, using tongs to turn the chunks of meat to brown it on all sides.

      Peel and dice the carrots and potatoes as the meat is browning.

      Add the water slowly to avoid making the flour lumpy when the meat is browned, filling the pot half way full. Turn the heat up to high.

      Reduce the heat to medium when the pot comes to a low boil. Add the potatoes, carrots, frozen mixed vegetables, tomato sauce and ketchup. Add the garlic powder, salt and pepper to taste.

      Bring the stew to a slight boil again. Cover and cook for an hour, or until the potatoes are easily pierced with a fork. Serve immediately.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stir occasionally so that the potatoes do not stick to the bottom.
