Using your student discount on flights and airfare will save you lots of money compared to what a non-student would pay, and make it possible for you to afford to travel during school breaks. There are a few steps that you need to follow to make sure that your student discount is applied to your airfare properly. Here's what to do to get your student discount applied onto your flights and airfare.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure that you have a current and valid student ID. Sometimes students lose or misplace their ID and don't think about it until they need it again. Many times airlines will require a faxed copy of your student ID in order to provide you with the discount, so check to be sure that you have it before you go any further.

  2. Step 2

Call the airline in question to ask about their student discounts and rates. Each airline has a different policy to determine the amount of discount offered to students, and the only way to get current information is to make an actual telephone call to ticketing.

  3. Step 3

Inform the representative right away that you are a student looking for special airfare rates. This will save you time because they will be able to enter the correct screen on their computer from the beginning, instead of having to back track 5 minutes into the conversation once you finally inform them of your student status.

  4. Step 4

Have your payment ready to go. Student discount airfares can vanish in an instant and the best ones generally don't last a long time. For this reason it's important that you lock in your discount by paying right away.

  5. Step 5

Record all of your confirmation numbers. After you pay you should be given a confirmation or ticket number. In case there are problems at ticketing when you go to check in you'll need this number for reference. This will save you the hassle of proving that you are a student again and explaining your situation if there are any issues while checking in.
