How to Make Recycled Paper in the Classroom
Using old newspaper, computer paper or other scrap paper to make recycled paper in the classroom is a fun project for students. The supplies are inexpensive and the students can use the recycled paper to make greeting cards or other craft projects.
Things You'll Need
- Old newspaper, computer paper or other scrap paper
- Plastic buckets
- Wire coat hangers
- Old nylon stockings
- Food coloring (optional)
- Baking pans or cookie sheets
- Old iron (optional)
Instructions

1
Tear the scrap paper into 1-inch-by-1-inch squares. Place the paper in plastic buckets – one bucket per four students is recommended. Fill the buckets with water and allow them to sit for at least 24 hours.
-
2
Prepare the screens for forming the paper by bending wire coat hangers into squares or rectangles that will fit into baking pans or cookie sheets. Cover each hanger with a piece of nylon stocking and staple or tie in place.

3
Drain excess water from the buckets into a trash can, not down the sink drain. Use hands to make a paper/water slurry. Add food coloring, if desired, and mix well.
-
4
Set a nylon covered screen into a baking pan or cookie sheet. Place several handfuls of slurry on the screen. Use hands to spread the slurry into a thin layer. Lift the screen and allow water to drain. Press pulp with hands to squeeze out extra moisture.
-
5
Flip the screen paper side down on to newspaper or old towels. Allow the paper to dry. This may take several days.
-
6
Use an old iron to press the paper flat, or place the paper between old newspapers and stack several books on top. Let it sit for 24 hours before using.
