Things You'll Need:
- Carpet cleaner spray
- Old sheet or tarp
- Clean sponge
- Old toothbrush
- Sanitizing room spray
- Fabric softener sheet
-
Step 1
Remove the futon cover. If it needs washing, look for stains and spot clean them first with a product like Shout that has a built-in brush to rub the gel into the fabric.
If you take it to a dry cleaner, be sure to point out stains that need special attention to the order clerk. -
Step 2
Remove the mattress from the futon frame and lay it flat on the floor or carpet where you can easily work around it and have space to flip it over.
If the weather permits, spread an old sheet or plastic tarp on the grass and let the sunshine assist you in the following procedures. -
Step 3
If all of the surface of the mattress is heavily soiled, lightly spray one half of the mattress fabric with a carpet cleaner spray. Let set for 3 minutes and wipe gently in a one way direction with a clean damp sponge. Rinse and repeat if necessary. Do the same for the second half of that side of the mattress.
After both top and bottom plus the four sides have been wiped over, if severe stains are still visible, use additional cleaner and a damp toothbrush on the stains. It may be impossible to restore the mattress to a new look, but at least it has been disinfected. Let dry thoroughly by standing it one side so it has air circulation on all sides. -
Step 4
Place the mattress back on the futon frame, and cover it with a new slipcover, or the original one you have washed or was dry cleaned.
