While researching a recent flowering tree I found in my yard, I came across a web site advising that the Rose of Sharon flowers are edible, so I decided to do some experimenting and came up with a variation of a recipe I found on line. The flowering shrub or tree dates back to pre-Bible days. You can find it mentioned in Song of Solomon.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • about 16 Rose of Sharon flowers
  • 1 pint of sour cream
  • 2 scoops of cottage cheese
  • 1 tbsp. minced dehydrated onion
  • 1 tbsp. Papa Dash
  • 1 tsp. Parmesan cheese
  1. Step 1

Pick about 15 to 16 flowers off your tree (16 if you want one to garnish the dish).

  2. Step 2

Rinse gently. Remove petals from flowers being careful to avoid any insects.

  3. Step 3

Dump one pint of sour cream in blender.

  4. Step 4

Chop petals and drop into sour cream as blending.

  5. Step 5

Add in 2 heaping serving spoons of cottage cheese.

  6. Step 6

Blend in spices. If you have a particular favorite add it too.

  7. Step 7

Blend thoroughly for about 60 seconds. Mixture will turn a light pastel shade depending on color of flower. There should not be any large pieces.

  8. Step 8

Let sit overnight for flavors to reach their peak.

Tips & Warnings
  • Spices that can be considered are cumin, basil, thyme, oregano, rosemary...
  • Always be careful when using a knife.

on 10/3/2009 This is my lesson for today. Aside from the main ingredient, Rose of Sharon (which sure sounds delicious), every ingredient is high on my list. The photo at the top looks ravishing. Ever think of bottling this? LOL Thank you for this great (and easy) recipe.
