Change Your Boat Prop
Change Your Boat Prop

When changing your propeller on a mercruiser stern drive (alpha and bravo drivers) there are some key things to keep in mind depending on the hub design.

This article will suplly you with a step by step list of instructions from a mercruiser factory trained tech.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Torque wrench
  • block of wood
  • socket (alpha 1-1/16")
  • socket (bravo1 1-1/16")
  • socket (bravo2 1-7/16")
  • socket (bravo3 1-7/16")
  • wrench (bravo3 2-13/16")
  1. Step 1

First Make sure the boat is off!!! Changing the propeller can be done in the water if you can reach it from your swim platform. However I will describe it as it is out of the water on a trailer.

  2. Step 2

First use the Trailer button and raise the out drive all the way up.

Alpha drives 1983-present / bravo I drives: bend the 3 ears of the lock ring tab up.
put the block of wood between one of the prop blades and the cavatation plate. Using a 1-1/16 inch socket turn the nut counterclockwise until it comes off. Remove the locking ring and bronze drive sleeve. Now you can slide the old prop off. Behind the prop there is a thick bronze thrust washer, remove that as well. Installation: install the prop in reverse order, its all the same. tighten the 1-1/16" nut to 52 foot lbs.

  3. Step 3

Bravo II drives are the same except the Nut is 1-7/16"

Bravo III drives: Use the block of wood to stop the prop from turning. use the 1-7/16" socket to remove the nut. the outer prop will slide off and be careful not to lose the trust washer behind it. Now block the rear prop. Use the 2-13/16 wrench to remove the nut. Now the rear prop will slide off and be careful not to lose the trust washer behind it. Install in reverse order tighten very tight, both are nylon locking nuts.
