How to Construct a Argumentative Essay
Writing a college-level argumentative essay requires getting your point across to an audience on multiple levels. Such a paper states a thesis that consists of an opinion or judgment on a specific topic -- one that may be controversial -- and then supports the main idea with evidence. You don't want to simply present information, but arrange it in a manner that hammers home the validity of your thesis.

1
Pick your topic, then state a claim based on the issue. For example, you might choose euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide. You would then stake out a position for or against it, with an emphasis on societal benefits or dangers. Form a thesis sentence based on your position.
-
2
Gather research that others have used to argue against your position.
-
-
3
Gather evidence to rebut the arguments against your position.
-
4
Start constructing your essay. Come up with title and introductory statement. The opening and closing arguments should both support your claim.
-
5
Appeal to your reader on three levels. Your paper must appeal to logos (logic); ethos (ethics), which provides credibility; and pathos (emotion). Such an approach will help your reader to identify with your perspective and lure him toward that viewpoint.
-
6
Address the issues and rebut the opposing arguments you've found until the conclusion is reached. Be sure to use transitions to construct your paper as you shift from argument to argument. Discuss individual arguments in separate paragraphs.
-
7
Tie up all the arguments in a conclusion that restates your central idea.
