Google Reader is a great, simple, free, web-based RSS reader. It is a great way to keep up with current events and information. However, what if you are currently using another RSS reader and want to switch? Does that mean you have to reenter all of your feeds again? Well, no. Let me explain how to bring over your feeds from another reader into Google Reader.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Google Account
  • Current RSS Reader
  1. Step 1

Every feed reader has their menus setup differently. However, most, if not all, of them have an option where you can backup or export your feeds. The two most common file types for export are the XML and OPML file. Google Reader accepts an OPML format, so make sure to save your feeds in that format. Like mentioned, every reader is different so you'll have to export them on your own. As a rule of thumb, check the "edit" or "tools" menus. Usually there is an option there.

  2. Step 2

To begin, open up Google Reader. (www.google.com/reader). You'll have to login with your Google ID. If you don't have an ID, please sign up. It takes a few seconds.

  3. Step 3

Next, click on "Settings", which is located on the top-right corner.

  4. Step 4

    Then, go to "Import/Export".

  5. Step 5

Then, under "Import your subscriptions", hit the browse button labeled [Select an OPML File:] "Choose File".

  6. Step 6

Next, browse through you file manager to find where you have saved your OPML file from your other reader.

  7. Step 7

    Then, hit "Upload".

  8. Step 8

This will upload the OPML File and you will have successfully imported your RSS feeds.
