Your computer's IP address makes it recognizable on the Internet.

On occasion, it may be necessary to find the IP address, subnet mask and gateway information for your Windows Vista PC. Sometimes the IP addresses for multiple network adapters are needed along with dynamic IP address information, such as whether or not DHCP (dynamic IP addressing) is enabled, the "gateway" address of the network to which your PC is connected and the DNS addresses that your PC is using to resolve Internet host names to IP addresses. All of this information can be found using the command prompt in Windows Vista.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," "All Programs" and "Accessories."

    • 2

Right-click "Command Prompt" and click "Run as administrator."

    • 3

Type "ipconfig /all" (without quotes) after the command prompt and press "Enter." Your computer's IP address and network configuration information will display. It includes, but is not limited to, the MAC address, IP address, subnet mask, gateway IP address, DNS addresses, whether or not DHCP is enabled and whether or not a network adapter is connected to the network.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you need to save the output information from the command prompt, right-click the title bar at the top of the command prompt window and click "Edit." Click "Select All," right-click the title bar again and click "Edit" again. Click "Copy." Open Notepad in Accessories, click "Edit," then "Paste" and save the Notepad document.
