Before dispensing with punishment you should take a moment or moments to ensure that you are calm. It is neither good for you or the children if you administer punishment while you are highly upset. In this way you can protect yourself from over reacting.

After ensuring your calmness, you should first take the time to explain to the children that what was done was wrong. Also explain that the punishment is a result of their actions and not because you are mean or mad at them.

Some people may believe in corporal punishment (spanking). Before applying corporate punishment, try some non-physical disciplines, like being sent to the room, cut out the tv privileges, go to the corner for time-out.
