How to Properly Seal Vinyl Retrofit Windows
As your windows age, the seals around them begin to break down, and they become energy inefficient due to leaks. When replacing the old windows, many people choose vinyl retrofit windows because of their durability and low maintenance. When installing the windows, it's important to properly seal them in order to maximize their energy efficiency and prevent leaks from occurring. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Caulk
- Caulk gun
- Shims
- Drill
- Screws
- Foam-rubber backer rod
- Expanding foam insulation

Place the caulk in your caulk gun. Apply two thick beads of caulk around the window frame.

Place the window into the frame, adding shims between the window and the frame to even it out if necessary.

Screw the window to the frame using your drill.

Plug the gaps around the window on your home's exterior. If the gaps are larger than 1/4 inch wide, install foam-rubber backer rod into the gap. The backer rod is a foam rod that plugs the gap and provides a base for the caulk. If the gaps are 1/4 inch wide or smaller, apply a thick bead of caulk to them.

Apply caulk over the backer rod and around the outside edges of the window frame.

Spray expanding foam insulation into the gaps around the window on the inside of the house.
