The overhead shot in tennis is one of the fundamental shots that every tennis player should know how to hit. An overhead tennis shot will almost always give the hitter of the overhead the point, if executed correctly. Here's how to hit a tennis overhead.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A tennis racquet
  • Tennis balls
  1. Step 1

A tennis overhead should be hit whenever a ball is lobbed up into the air, and it is going to land in front of you. Instead of waiting for the tennis ball to bounce and hitting a ground stroke, hitting a tennis overhead can put speed on the ball that a ground stroke cannot, and will more likely than not put the point in your favor.

  2. Step 2

To hit an overhead, imagine that your opponent just hit a lob that is going pretty high in the air, not very deep into the court (it will bounce in front of you if it was going to bounce). The first step is to get ready to hit the overhead. To do this, pull your tennis racquet back and turn your body, just as if you were going to hit a serve.

  3. Step 3
Turn your body, pull your tennis racquet back like a serve, and point at the tennis ball

Make sure you use your off arm and put it up towards the tennis ball, as if you were pointing at it. This will help you prevent from mishitting the tennis overhead shot. Run up to where you are right you will hit the ball, as this will allow you to set up and concentrate on hitting an overhead.

  4. Step 4

Next, when the ball is low enough for you to hit it with your arm outstretched to its fullest, swing your tennis racquet as if you were hitting a serve. You can hit a tennis overhead with or without spin, whichever you prefer. Make sure you keep your head up as you are hitting the tennis ball, as this will will prevent mishits.

  5. Step 5

Finally, one last thing you need to consider is where to place the overhead. Try to keep an eye on where your opponent is on the court prior to hitting your overhead shot (without losing track of the ball). Then, hit the tennis ball away from your opponent, and you should win the point. Another tip is to make sure you hit the tennis ball deep into the court (being certain not to hit it out), as this will make it harder for your opponent to return. Now that you know how to hit a tennis overhead, go out and try it!
